UNSEEN FREQUENCIES

Sonification of Microorganisms
Hannes Buchwieser (DE)
UNSEEN FREQUENCIES was developed at the Ars Electronica Center’s Bio Lab and makes microscopic activity audible in real time.
The movements of tardigrades, threadworms, and other microscopic life forms are transformed into evolving soundscapes.
A tracking system analyzes the microscope image and converts motion into data streams, which are translated into sonic textures by synthesizers. This process turns otherwise invisible activity into an atmospheric acoustic landscape.
Hannes Buchwieser (*1986, DE) studies Time-based and Interactive Media Art at the University of Arts Linz. He attended Bauhaus University Weimar & Willem de Kooning Academy Rotterdam and previously studied Cultural and Social Anthropology in Vienna. His work has been shown internationally since 2022. He develops projects at the Ars Electronica Center’s Bio Lab, is part of the Artist-in-Residence Team at Semmelweis Clinic Vienna, and will be Artist in Residence in Gwangju (South Korea) in July.
