224 km from Spielfeld, refugees are forcibly prevented from crossing the border between Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia and pushed back. As a result, many of these people are stuck for years in the border area of Una-Sana Canton. They have to struggle to survive in inhumane and miserable conditions. "Since I first visited the then Bosnian 'horror camp' Vučjak - which is located next to a minefield that dates back to the civil war of the 1990s - together with the SOS Balkan Route initiative in November 2019, the suffering of the people on the Balkan route never leaves my mind. The struggle against the normality of the ugly images, as well as the empathy and willingness to help of many fellow human beings in Austria and the Balkans have been the foundation of my work from the very beginning."
